Objectives:

  1. Include non-drug strategies alone or in conjunction with each other as the foundation of any multi-modal pain management plan, including those that can be patient self-directed.
  2. Help patients increase feelings of control and take an active role in their treatment plan by engaging them in non-drug strategies to help improve pain and function and reduce the need for medications, including opioids.
  3. Choose positive language when discussing diagnosis and pain management and address common psychosocial factors that can negatively influence a patient’s ability to improve and hinder or prolong recovery.
